Ponds and creeks are places families sometimes choose to spend an afternoon, and one can usually be found without having to travel a great distance from home. Families can enjoy the great outdoors together many different ways. Whether you want to be active or a little more relaxed, there are fun things that can be brought to the creek or pond to enhance the experience.
Fishing Equipment
A fun thing to take to a pond or creek is fishing equipment. This includes fishing poles, bait and something to store the fish in once they have been caught. Fishing is a relaxing activity that is also fun and exciting for all ages. Families can decide whether they want to take their 'catch' home, or just want to fish for the fun of it and throw the caught fish back in the water.
Binoculars
Binoculars are a fun thing to take to a pond or creek, because you can use them to enjoy the nature around you. One fun family activity is bird watching. You can research local bird guides at the library or on the Internet, and use your binoculars to try to spot those particular birds while you're at the pond or creek. If you are in a heavily wooded area, you can also try to find other animals such as deer, squirrels or chipmunks.
A Camera
Bring a camera to the pond or creek to capture memories on film. You can take pictures of your family, and also your surroundings. The pictures you take can be placed in a family photo album or scrapbook. Families who like to send family newsletters to relatives who live far away can scan these photos to be uploaded on a computer and added to their newsletters. If you are a nature lover, you can take pictures of the scenery for your photo collection.
Picnic Supplies
Having a picnic while at the pond or creek is a fun family activity. You can fill your picnic basket and cooler with the types of food and drinks your family will enjoy. It is also a good idea to have several bottles of water in the cooler to drink during the day to avoid dehydration. Enjoying a nice picnic meal outdoors is a very pleasant memory for children to have.
Sunbathing Supplies
While at the pond or creek, one way to relax and unwind is to do a little sunbathing. If your time spent outdoors was mostly active, this can be a good way to have a little downtime. Wear a bathing suit under your clothes, so that later on you can smooth on some sunscreen, lay out a large blanket, and catch some sun rays. It is also a good idea to spray on some insect repellent as well.
